Scripture:
“This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.” (John 9:3)
Reading:
I have vivid memories of sailing with my parents in choppy waters. My dad yelling, “Coming about,” and being walloped by the metal arm of a swinging sail. Sometimes hard things simply come about due to no fault of our own.
Like the blind beggar in John 9 you may have been born with an exceptional challenge or perhaps one has come about. Sin is often at the root of our challenges, but in this man’s case, Jesus made it clear that his blindness was divinely purposed (John 9:3).
“After he said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud from the saliva, and spread the mud on his eyes. ‘Go,’ he told him, ‘wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means “Sent”). So he left, washed, and came back seeing.” (John 9:6-7)
Nothing is above Christ’s purpose and ability to transform. Spit and mud became a healing balm. Darkness became light. A blind beggar became an eternal witness encouraging spiritual sight for endless generations.
Christ desires to reveal Himself in our trials as well (Psalm 22:30). Yet without welcoming Jesus into our darkness, we are refusing what God wants to provide. We may think we see Him, but the reality is we are still spiritually blind.
In the case of this beggar, it was the religious leaders who opposed Jesus’ work. Infuriated, they threw out the man who without wavering magnified Jesus as the Savior.
This side of eternity pain will come about, but then again so does Jesus to all who welcome Him.
“Jesus heard that they had thrown the man out, and when he found him, he asked, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’” (John 9:35)
Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? If so, be confident that He has purposed good (Genesis 50:20, Romans 8:28). The Lord has found you and His work is coming about in you.
Your Turn:
Do you sense your own need for Jesus? Like this man what has come about in your life that only God can heal? Have you been thrown out in some way? Invite Jesus into your pain.
What was your life like when Jesus found you? How has He healed you? Take time to thank Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, in what ways am I spiritually blind? I want to see Your beauty. I welcome Your light into every area of my life. Thank You for Your healing. Reveal Yourself, Lord Jesus. Amen.
