Scripture:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)
Reading:
God honors humility. The world honors self-reliance. Whose honor do you want to experience?
It takes humility to believe in God, to trust Him, and depend on Him like a child. Certainly, Holy Spirit’s grace sounds ideal, yet the quick fix of worldly praise is alluring. This quick fix is exactly what leads us to worship ourselves, rather than our Creator.
"Humility is nothing but the disappearance of self in the vision that God is all." Andrew Murray’s definition from his classic work Humility is a refreshing thought. To lose ourselves in recognition of God’s majesty and holiness is to be free from the bondage of self-worship.
Consider these thoughts to navigate your way to deeper humility and faith.
1. Humility perceives oneself in the light of Christ. John Flavel wrote, “They that know God will be humble; they that know themselves cannot be proud.” Humble yourself before God. He offers grace to free you from the bondage of pride and unbelief. “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
2. Humility reflects Jesus. Scripture reveals Jesus as meek, humble, and gentle (Matthew 5:5, 21:5). Consider the humility of Christ the King, who sent His Spirit to live in you, His beloved, simple jar of clay (John 15:26, 2 Corinthians 4:7). We are instructed to put on this very humility of Jesus with the realization that He alone is God (Colossians 3:12).
3. Humility reveals Christ to others. Humility is not an outward show. It is the inner realization of a lack of merit before God. Out of gratitude for God’s mercy, serve Him by serving people, His image bearers. Reveal Christ’s gospel through practical manifestations of His love.
Paul put it this way: “I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20) What a clear picture of the humility and faith that God honors.
Your Turn:
Ask God to replace your pride and unbelief with humility and faith.
What can you do to gain a clearer perspective of God’s majesty and holiness?
In what ways can you faithfully serve God by serving others?
Prayer:
Father God, I do believe. Please grant me grace to live like it with humility. I pray for a correct perspective of myself in Your light. Please reflect and reveal Christ through me to others. In Christ’s name and for Your glory I pray. Amen.
