Scripture:
“’Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” (Matthew 28:19-20)
Reading:
God has a way for you to make disciples that fits your unique personality and daily interactions. Scripture implies your leading others to Christ is intended to be a natural extension of your relationship with Him rather than a duty.
Take, for instance, Lois and Eunice.
“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5)
When Paul wrote these words from a dank prison cell, he was not referring to Timothy’s family traditions. Rather, he was recalling the example of these women.
These ladies’ day-to-day interactions and conversations communicated faith and obedience to Christ. This was the catalyst for Timothy’s sincere faith. These women were contagious disciple-makers.
When a Samaritan woman told her neighbors about her encounter with Jesus, enthusiasm was not something she worked up. Her experience became a part of who she was and naturally flowed into conversations. After interacting with this contagious woman, scripture says people were compelled to reach Jesus.
“’Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?’ They left the town and made their way to him.” (John 4:29-30)
This flow is the joyful, natural disciple-making Jesus commands. Love God by allowing the volition of your relationship with Jesus to roll into your everyday interactions. Love others by fueling their trust in Christ. Love your life as you partner with the Holy Spirit in being a faithful disciple-maker.
Your Turn:
Describe an interaction with someone that drew you in and piqued your interest. What was contagious about that person?
By devoting time to scripture and prayer God will grow your relationship with Jesus. Making disciples will become a natural extension of who you are.
Prayer:
Father God, according to Your Word, You have commissioned me to make disciples in my coming and going. I want to be a faithful witness. I pray for Your grace to lead others to Jesus. Make me a contagious Christian, Lord. Amen.
