Prince of Peace

Prince of Peace

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

I’m convinced God enjoys naming things.

From the beginning of the Bible, we read God named humankind His image-bearers. Throughout scripture, He repeatedly renamed people to mirror their character and purpose. Names are a big deal to God. Considering God inspired the titles reflective of His one and only Son’s nature, we are wise to pay attention to them.

So in this chaotic world, what does it mean that Jesus is the Prince of Peace?

It reveals we are incapable of creating our own peace. Jesus as the Prince of Peace implies that peace belongs to him and it’s his alone to bestow.

Do you recall how Jesus slept in a fishing boat in the middle of a furious storm (see Matthew 8:23-27)?

Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves, and then there was complete calm and peace. In the midst of that fear and chaos, Jesus made himself known to his disciples as the Prince of Peace.

Jesus has not ceased caring for and revealing himself to those who follow him. Jesus said, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” (John 14:21) Other translations use the words reveal, show; the Amplified Bible translation says, “I will make Myself real to him.”

On the evening of that raging storm, the disciples perhaps overlooked who was with them. Let's be different in this regard by the power of the Holy Spirit. Ask God for grace to remember that He is your constant companion and yield to His leading. Obey. In return, He will reveal His presence with you, and life’s undercurrent will grow increasingly tranquil despite circumstances.

“the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” (John 14:26-27)

PRAYER

Glorious Father, thank You for adopting me as your child and renaming me “Beloved” (Romans 9:25). Thank You that because of Jesus my Savior I can experience true peace. I ask for the grace to remember Your presence with me and grace to obey. Please help me to experience the peace that comes from You. Amen.
