Using Time

Scripture:

“Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk — not as unwise people but as wise — making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17)

Reading:

“Uses time wisely.” That is not exactly the testimony of my report cards. Seated next to a window, the curiosities that drew my attention as an elementary student regularly won.

Who decides what is a wise use of time anyway? Authority wins here – teachers, bosses, toddlers. I joke with the latter, but the demands of life are a reality. When we answer who or what is our authority, we gain a better understanding of how to use time.

Christians believe God created the concept of time for His creation (Genesis 1:14-19). He is the authority of time. It is naïve to think we can master it. Truly, only our thoughts and actions are the pieces we control.

With God’s authority in mind the New Testament emphasizes “making the best use of the time.” (Eph. 5:16, Colossians 4:5) In both letters to the Ephesians and Colossians, Paul exhorts us to live wisely, to carefully walk in the light of Jesus. To do so is to use our time wisely as we “try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Eph. 5:10)

1.   “…walk — not as unwise people but as wise - …” (Eph. 5:15)

As a follower of Christ, emulate Christ. Diligently pursue and value the wisdom God provides in scripture (Proverbs 2:1-6). Remember, Jesus said the wise build [their lives] on the rock of His Word (Matthew 7:24-27).

2.   “…making the most of the time…” (Eph.5:16)

“The present evil age” is notorious for distractions (Galatians 1:4). What fritters away your time? Pray about it, then prioritize what God considers important. For example, Jesus prioritized time with the Father by rising early to pray before beginning His day (Mark 1:35).

3.   “…understand what the Lord’s will is.” (Eph. 5:17)

Pursuing God’s wisdom will shape your thoughts, actions, and sharpen your discernment regarding decisions. “Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true) and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Eph. 5:8-10) The Holy Spirit will empower you to emulate Christ and discern what is the best use of time

Your Turn:

1.   Who or what has authority over your time? What is the evidence that you are using time wisely?

2.   Give yourself over to thoughts and actions that build your life according to God’s Word. This will take time, just as it took time to build your current life, but by walking in the light you will use time wisely and please God.

Prayer:

God, thank You for being the authority of time. Please help me to prioritize what is important to You. I ask to bear the fruit of light (what is good, right, and true) with the time You have given me. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray. Amen.
