Wisdom

Scripture:

“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” (1 John 2:6)

Reading:

Wisdom is a relationship, not a result. Jesus walked, talked, and lived wisdom because of his relationship with his Heavenly Father. Likewise, you can walk, talk, and live wisely if you are in relationship with Jesus Christ.

As a young believer, I had an a-ha moment when a Christian friend revealed that when deciding she asks herself, “What is wise?” In other words, it is wise to first consider not what popculture or your neighbor may suggest, but what Jesus would do in your situation.

Through the gospels we see Jesus interacting with people. We read His parables, and about His perspectives and practices. We also find He consistently referred people back to God’s Word. He did this because God’s wisdom for humanity is revealed through scripture and its precepts, through Jesus “the Word made flesh.” (John 1:14)

“Oh, the depth of the riches… of the wisdom… of God!” (Romans 11:33)

When we spend time in God’s company through His Word and prayer and seek godly counsel we are investing in our lives. We grow in wisdom. The fruit of wisdom is a heart fully committed to God. That is a heart God continuously shapes into Christlikeness.

It is a lifelong walk with Jesus, following in His steps. How incredible that heavenly wisdom comes from spending time with the Son of God. Be encouraged! As you grow in your relationship with Christ, who is wisdom, your ability to walk, talk, and live wisely will grow as well.

Application:

  1. Is your talk wiser than your walk? What would it take for your walk to line up with your talk?

  2. Challenge yourself to reading one chapter of Proverbs a day. You will read the entire book by the end of the month. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to live what you read.

  3. Read three chapters in the gospels a day starting in Matthew, and you will read all four gospels in 30 days.  Ask the Holy Spirit to make scripture come alive to you.

Prayer:

Father God, Your Word says that “He who walks with the wise grows wise.” (Proverbs 13:20) Lord Jesus, by Your grace I want to know You through scripture, prayer, and the power of Your Spirit to such a degree that I grow wise. I fully commit my heart to You. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
