O Little Town

Scripture:

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micah 5:2)

Reading:

On the night of Christ’s birth, nestled in the Judean hillside, heads rested on pillows aware of their insignificance amid grander neighbors. Angels rejoiced above, captivated by the Christ of Heaven now a helpless baby on earth.

Like any other morning, the townspeople awoke knowing Bethlehem was noted by God no matter the size of its tiny map dot. Little did they know, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.” (John 1:14 MSG)

The Lord became flesh not for us primarily, but for the Father. All that God revealed through the law, the prophets, and the psalms would be fulfilled by Jesus (Luke 24:27). Christ’s mission was to restore all people to God the Father. Of course, God’s plan was achieved perfectly.

Since the day of Christ’s resurrection and humanity’s restoration, God gives the Holy Spirit to those who place their trust in Christ. He is our assurance of salvation and guarantee of eternal life. “…hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” (Romans 5:5)

As you remember Jesus’ miraculous birth in Bethlehem, remember He is near you. Christ is drawn to little places and no human heart is too remote for Him to reach. Like the ancients of Bethlehem rest in the assurance that God sees you and celebrate the gift of Jesus, the One who rules for God.

Application:

1.     Meditate on the fact that God’s Spirit is within those who welcome Jesus as Savior and Lord. (John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 6:19)

2.     Glance through the gospels looking for the “little” in Jesus’ parables and circumstances. What is Jesus’ perspective of the insignificant, small, marginalized? What does this reveal about Jesus? About you?

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for the gift of Your Son Jesus. I am in awe when I rest and ponder that You have come to be with me. I trust You to rule in my life. I love You, Lord Jesus, and celebrate You! Amen.
