Live by the Spirit | Feel Free Blog - Day 35

Today’s Reading
“Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (Galatians 5:25 NLT)

Growing up, I was a big USA Women’s soccer fan. I had the jersey, I read the books, I watched every game and knew all the stats. I loved the team, so I walked the walk and talked the talk. When you take an interest in something it’s quite easy to let it consume you: by the way you spend your time, thoughts, how you dress and how you speak.

But, there is a giant, flashing neon caution sign that comes with that. It’s slightly wordy, but it says, “Don’t let this have authority over your life, because what you give authority to is what you follow and start to resemble. And the only thing you need to follow and resemble, the only thing good for your soul, is the Spirit.” It’s a really big sign.

The traits we embody, the way we act, what we are shaped and make decisions by are often based on what we give authority to in our lives. For some of us it’s social media, or our career or a person in our life. Those things may resemble or even bear good fruit themselves, but God is the only source of the good fruit. He is the only good soil and steady foundation that enables us to confidently and boldly walk in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, and do it unshakably. He is the only source. (John 6:35) Thus, the only One worthy of having that authority in our lives. The jersey I want to wear is the one that says, “I belong to Jesus.” So I read His book and listen to His words flow through our Pastor and group leaders at church. I count the victories and blessings that God has given me and brothers and sisters in Christ.

Reflection
If we want to follow the Spirit’s leading then we need to give it authority in our lives. Is there anything that is taking authority in our lives that should be given to God?
Read John 6:35. Consider how Jesus as the Bread of Life relates to the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so deeply that You want to be a part of every area of our lives; and that we can trust You fully with every area. Lord, You are faithful and loving beyond our ability to comprehend. Reveal to us areas in which we need to trust You. God, give us the wisdom, courage and excitement to allow ourselves to live by and be filled by the Spirit. In Jesus’ name; amen.
